Part of what fascinates me about a new song is the process it undergoes. From an emotion in my heart, or an idea in my head, to a simple chorus which grows into a chord progression and half-finished lyrics. It's like watching your own child as he/she grows up, making decisions you may have ever expected, but which - for better or for worse - end up shaping the person who now stands before you, touching and effecting the world, whom you love so much that you would lay down your life for them.
"
You Come Running" is a song I began writing back in '02/'03 while still on staff with
WDA in Athens, GA. I was leading a Bible study on the Prodigal Son written by
Tim Keller (which just happens to have been released as
a book late last year). Needless to say, that study moved me - I based a teaching I've given a number of times on it, called "
Two Prodigals", and also wrote this song, which I've led - in various styles - in Sunday Services at
my church, and at Brunswick Christian Renewal Church and St. Simons United Methodist, as well as at a number of our youth and college events, and even live on the radio.
The lyrics leave some uncomfortable, which I like: they are both confessional - expressing my own doubts about God's love - and doctrinal, as they remind me of the truth that God is always there, running to us with open arms. My doubting heart needs that reminder often.
This recording is still in 'demo' form, though it's beginning to get fleshed out pretty well. I'd love to hear your thoughts from both a songwriting, and production standpoint, or just your heart's response to the song.
I hope it moves you to love God even more for what He's done for you.
